Lipstick is a combination of wax, oil, and coloring pigments. It also contains substances that provide and maintain lip moisture. Although lipstick is chiefly used to put additional color on the lips, there are a variety of lipsticks that offer different characteristics. There are frosted lipsticks, which give the lips an extra shine. The most regular kinds are matte lipsticks, which contain more wax and coloration, but are less shiny than frosted ones. Lipstick is applied by running the wax tube over the lips. The color clings to the lips for a relative period of time, but would eventually fade.
Lip stain, on the other hand, does not contain wax components. This variation of lip color makeup usually comes in liquid form; the function of a lip stain can be derived from its name. The idea is to saturate the lips with colored dye that would potentially last longer than its wax counterpart. It takes more time for a lip stain to fade because the colored dye seeps into the lips, therefore it withstands wear better. In addition to wear-resistance, lip stains are also said to be smudge-proof and waterproof. The product is applied to the lips by using a brush or applicator that is usually contained in the package. There are roll-on versions as well.
